Máire O'Keeffe comes from Tralee, Co. Kerry and is presently a Ph D student at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in the University of Limerick studying "The role of the button accordion in Irish Traditional Music". She is well known as a traditional fiddle player with her repertoire including music from such varied traditions as Sliabh Luachra, Donegal, Shetland and Cape Breton. She is also very involved in teaching traditional fiddle playing and Máire's method of teaching traditional music was studied by Dr. Kari Veblen for her doctoral thesis "Perceptions of Change and Stability in the Transmission of Irish Traditional Music: An Examination of the Music Teacher's Role" at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. in 1991. Since the early eighties Máire has performed and given fiddle workshops at many festivals including Lorient Interceltique Festival in Brittanny, Celtic Festival in Vigo, Galicia, Edinburgh and Shetland Folk Festivals Glendale and Esksoni fiddle Festivals in Cape Breton. In 1995 and 1996 Máire taught the fiddle class at the Milwaukee Irish Fest summer school held in the University of Milwaukee and she performed at the festival following the summer school.
